GW074A - Ernst Udet

GW074A Ernst Udet one of Germany’s most successful aces; Udet joined the German Imperial Air Service when he was 19 years if age and ended WW1 with a total of 62 kills to his name, second only to the Red Baron. After the war Udet went onto become a stunt pilot and was also something of a playboy despite being only 5 ft 3 inches tall. In 1933 he joined the Nazi party and was appointed director for research and development, he eventually rose to become director general of equipment for the Luftwaffe. Udet found his role particularly stressful especially after the Luftwaffe failed to secure aerial supremacy during the Battle of Britain and came into regular conflict with Hermann Goring. In June 1941 Germany invaded Russia and with the strain this put on him and not helped by his dependency on alcohol and depression, Udet shot himself whilst on the telephone to his girlfriend. During his career he was awarded the Blue Max and The knights Cross, he was only 45 years old when he died. In our rendition of Udet we see him about to climb into his aircraft with a final wave to his comrades.
