GW072A - The Poet

The Poet Siegfried Sassoon CBE, MC; One of the nation's greatest war poets Sassoon became a focal point for dissent within the armed forces after seeing the futility of the continuation of the war in 1917. Awarded the Military Cross for bravery under fire and recommended for the Victoria Cross, Sassoon was an inspiration to the men under his command who considered him to lead a charmed existence, oblivious to enemy fire. He was admitted to a military psychiatric hospital towards the end of the conflict, after his literary piece 'A Soldiers Declaration' was read out in the houses of Parliament by a sympathetic friend. It was in hospital he formed a long lasting relationship with Wilfred Owen another war poet. Sassoon eventually returned to the front line but was shot in the head almost immediately by another British soldier who had mistaken him for a German! Sassoon went onto survive the war and became an author with some notable successes afterwards. He died in 1967 aged 80 years old. Our depiction of Sassoon has him writing notes perhaps his 'Soldiers Declaration' which got him into so much trouble with the authorities? Priced at $41 and limited to 100 pieces worldwide.
